Study - SOA Benefits Come at a Cost

Most of the reports from all real estate finance business color service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a strategic investment that will bring significant long term benefits.

A recent report from research firm Gartner shows one fruitful investment could come at a price.

As SOA is adopted across all industries, the number of failed projects has grown, Gartner said, and companies have discovered the advantages of having a price. Software products for SOA have hit the market, it adds, but they sometimes prove to be immature, disappointing customers poor reliability, efficiency and productivity.

The SOA principles applied too rigidly, which has created some unsatisfactory results and the project became too expensive and missed deadlines.

"Almost every technology taken too literally going to be devastating," said Andrew Weiss, CTO of automated underwriting specialist Overture Technologies. Weiss, who also served as senior vice president of advanced technology at Fannie Mae for almost ten years, commented on the report in an exclusive interview in Real Estate Technology News.

purist, he explained, could insist that every IT transactions occur through Web services. It may not be necessary, though - there May be other parts of the architecture, where SOA is not appropriate. Tasks involve large amounts of reference data, for example - where the SOA approach can make the application slower and requires more network resources - could best be handled through more traditional direct link

.

concessions

In comparison with traditional monolithic or client / server architecture, Gartner noted, SOA requires a careful application design and IT often means the expenditure of funds for integration middleware.

Weiss pointed out, however, that much of this software can be acquired though open-source channels, such as the Apache Web server and Tomcat Java server.

the greatest potential pain point, he said, will come from the interaction between legacy systems and new SOA-based applications. "Service pack" older systems will be possible but will require skills and knowledge - and perhaps some experimentation, Weiss said that the

.

There could be regional challenges, as well. Large urban areas on the shores of the United States may have a greater fund of SOA-savvy IT staff of those cities in other parts of the country.

challenge test

Gartner added to the list of pain points, arguing that testing, debugging, managing and securing distributed SOA network can also be complex and expensive compared to older IT architectures.

"Testing is an interesting question," said Weiss. "Testing costs can go up in the beginning, but you can actually change the model and paradigm for testing in a way that makes the test cost back at least to the level of the past, if not slightly lower ."

For example, when working with a monolithic architecture, lenders have to test almost end-to-end for any significant change. With SOA, they can only focus on the testing part of the ongoing changes and to fairly light end-to-end integration test.

is there ROI?

Despite falling prices of technology, more widespread know-how and availability of SOA services from systems integrators, in most cases it will be difficult to justify the incremental cost of pre-SOA compared to the traditional architecture for a quick return in investment, opportunistically oriented projects , said Gartner. Through 2008, upfront investment for large service-oriented applications will be justifiable only for projects with a planned lifetime of three years or more. However, if this is a meaningful statement in the mortgage world?

"Almost every project has more than three years, during the time you get it done," said Weiss.

ROI challenges Gartner states may be related to integrating new technologies with existing systems.

"If you take an old approach to the world and try to force a SOA-based project, you are likely to have some conflicts," said Weiss. "Does it call into question the value of SOA architecture or convenience of other practices? Would suggest the business value is there and showed a number of places and ways, but there needs to be recognition of the CIO May you need to change their practices somewhat ."

CIOs can make real "business value," he repeated Gartner, SOA because it helps them to deliver more housing in the budget situation -. Even those working to keep up with the endless business changes

They should also see greater flexibility, faster deployment time and cost savings for application development and integration.

company research analysis suggested that the company's "invest aggressively" in the SOA, as it is on the fast track to become the architectural foundation for almost all new business-critical applications.
